[:en]Having red clothing and accessories on hand is rather useful in Chinese-speaking countries like Singapore, as red is an auspicious colour which symbolises good fortune and joy. As a result, red can be incorporated into outfits at various times of the year. Here in Singapore that can include Lunar New Year, National Day, and even Christmas.

Now that I think about it, my daughter has been able to wear her red dress since back in 2011! <– She’s growing up so “long”, I’m a little envious! But that means that this year her dress is getting a little on the short side, so we may have to replace it. But it’s good that she wore the dress for 4 years!

While I’m on the subject of red dresses, I bought myself a crimson one-piece for this year’s Chinese New Year Other than that I actually have hardly any red clothing…well to be honest I’m really not that into red.

This year the holiday actually ended up as a four-day weekend, which meant that I had to come up with different outfits that centred around the all important red! The first day I wore a red cardigan, and on the second I featured my crimson top (and the best length for your neckless). On the third I changed it up a little, and wore a combination of both red and white to really enjoy the festive atmosphere.

 

 

 

Here I’m wearing a simple, white one-piece dress. I’ve actually used a red coral necklace as a belt for a bit more colour. I’m also holding a red stole that I remembered I had stored in a drawer.

 

 

I matched this outfit with these golden Peranakan motif earrings. You can also see a close-up of the necklace. And speaking of white one-pieces, my daughter also wore one on this particular day: twins! She wore the red cardigan that I wore on the first day around her neck.

I’ve had that cardigan for over 10 years. I find it’s very useful to wear over outfits because of the thin and stretchy material, but it also adds a pop of colour. Although I don’t wear this piece that often but this one is useful. You do not need to always listen to organising gurus saying that if you don’t wear it often or XX years that you have to throw it away. If you have an item that has kept its colour and shape over the years and help you occasionally, why not keep it in your life for a bit longer?

On the contrary, the top that I wore on the second day was something that I bought for Christmas back in the days when I lived in America. It is made of silk with a touch of cashmere, and is so comfortable. Although I’ve been careful to look after it, the material has seen better days. This one I may have to part ways with real soon.

It’s not that your relations is XX years but more with the fit, or the relationships that you have cherished. There are a lot of old loves in my closet, and I will keep good relationships with them. The important thing is deciding when to choose a particular item, when to repair it, and finally, identifying the right time to say goodbye.

Will you have a hot and quick connection, or will you maintain a long and steady relationship? Try deciding from the outset what kind of relationship you will have with your clothing as you bring it into your closet. Relationships that are intended to be short often become dragged on unexpectedly; be careful to make sure that those around you aren’t witness to the demise of your relationship!! (=in this case, I mean creases or lint balls on your clothing!)

 [:ja]シンガポールをはじめ、中国語圏で赤い服や小物を持っているとかなり重宝します。
旧正月、建国記念日、それからクリスマスにも使える赤 in シンガポール。

ムスメの赤いドレスも、振り返れば2011年から活躍していました。
←縦に伸びる羨ましい体型。でもさすがに今年は短くなってました。

とこんな風に書きながら、ワタシ自身は、今年の旧正月に深紅のワンピースを買いましたが、実は赤い服はほとんど持っていません。。。
だってそんなに惹かれないんだもん。
1日目のカーデガンと、2日目の(こちらも)深紅のトップス。

ですが、建国記念の4連休、3日間は紅白ファッションでお祝いムードを味わいました。

紅白ファッションパート3です。

シンプルな白のワンピースに、1日目に使った珊瑚のネックレスをベルトにして使いました。
赤いストールを持っていることを思い出し、手にもってみました。

ペラナカンモチーフのピアスと合わせて。

ちなみにこの日はムスメも白いワンピース。
1日目に使ったワタシの赤いカーデガンをムスメの首元に。

このカーデガン、10年以上使っています。
ストレッチの薄ーい生地で、ちょっとした羽織ものとして、そして色でアクセントを足すのに重宝しています。
退色もしていないし、もう少し活躍してもらいましょう。

反対に、2日目の深紅のトップスは、アメリカ滞在時代にやはりクリスマスに合わせて買ったもの。
シルクにちょっぴりカシミアが入っていてとても着心地がいいので大切に保管していましたが、ちょっと生地がおつかれさん。
こちらはそろそろさようならです。

年数ではなく、作りだったり、自分のもとに来た後のお手入れだったり。
ワタシのクローゼットにはベテラン選手も何人かいますが、これからも丁寧なおつき合いをしたいと思っています。

大切なのは、選ぶときと、お手入れと、それからお別れの時期の見極め。

短くホットな関係を持つのか、じっくりと長いおつきあいをするのか。
最初からどんなおつき合いをするのか決めて、クローゼットに連れて来て下さいね。

短い関係のつもりがついついダレた関係になって、周りからかわいそうなオンナに見られないように(=洋お洋服にシミがついていたりとか、生地が毛羽立っていたりとか)お気をつけ下さいね。
