Woohoo! Already thinking about your Christmas shopping? Every year when the sale season comes around, I consider how I can think wisely about my purchases. So what do I mean by shopping “wisely?”
- Aim for savings on high-end brands
- Aim for slightly adventurous items that you probably wouldn’t try at the regular price
- Aim for basic and well-tailored items (only to replace your current item)
It’s been bit a while but my recent “sale experience” was with Club 21. The Club21 sale is aimed at such adults, and it will likely be crowded this weekend. During my trip to the sale, I saw dresses up to 90% off, with usual prices of over $5000 SGD. There were high-end brand suits that I wanted to buy, provided that they fit. But of course, retail prices on all items have been slashed so many great items to be found. Naturally, “discontinued lines” can be found. You’ll also find inadequate clothing that was created to make other items stand out to be sold. And then there were also items that make you think “wow, I wonder if this is just the tag price?” While the brands (and their subsequent prices) are clearly aimed at adults, my reasoning for this point is how one is to find items that suit in a place where there aren’t even any mirrors in the fitting rooms. Most people there took selfies, although there was a brave woman who was carrying a large mirror! Yay! In my opinion, I think that it is best to go with friend who can be honest and impartial with you.
In a little over an hour, I bought three items:
- A jacket in a colour that I have wanted for a while
- A basic one-piece dress (a perfect fit, second generation piece I had been searching for)
- A shift blouson in my usual style (I wouldn’t have bought at the regular price, and if I hadn’t of been familiar with my personal colour I wouldn’t have chosen it)
In my case, because I roughly knew what items I was after, the range of items that I was actually looking at was quite small. I cast my eyes over the stock like a laser pointer. From the outset, I could eliminate looking for tops because I have enough at the moment. And of course I looked at the accent skirts, but the sizes were too big. I also avoided all colours that I didn’t want, not even casting an eye over them. I did want to take my time and look over everything meticulously, but ultimately I don’t think my purchases would have turned out any differently.
Envisage your goal image and go forth!
I’m already looking forward to next year.
In amongst the sales, there is something else that I am interested in which is related to closet organisation. It is known as #styleitforward, a clothing collection initiative by the Singapore Committee for UN Women. Pre-loved designer clothing and accessories are collected at the location of the sales, and at the Hilton Hotel from 26th-28th October. The initiative appears to be connected to the Singapore-wide fundraiser “Help Anna”. This enterprise is just wonderful, and I think it’s a great idea to collect pre-loved clothing in time with the sales! And from an organisational view of things, it’s better to donate your pre-loved items before replacing them with new ones. With the amount of clothes and the fantastic initiative, this somehow makes it a really amazing sale.
