While we live in a country where all of us appreciate and embrace multi-cultures, and wherever you go you can enjoy the colourful traditional costumes of different cultures. For us it’s Kimono but wearing Kimono is not so common in Singapore (or even in Japan…). We have different class of Kimonos that are worn for specific occasions and they are multiplied with seasonal materials and those materials have even more geographical varieties. Moreover, the seasons can be defined with the patterns of Kimono or Obi belt and the combination of the Kimono and Obi has certain rules. Oh, by the way the Obi belt also has the class, seasonal materials, how it’s made (woven or dyed) on top of the pattern that has meanings. We have underwear that covers whole body, followed by Nagajuban (a full-length undergarment worn under a kimono), then the Kimono. Depends on the occasion, a another layer of collar is added between Nagajuban and Kimono. So who wants such layers in this tropical climate?!
Us!!! While we still have some opportunities to wear Kimono for special occasions like weddings and parties but some of us are now enjoying monthly outings in Kimono :) We wear rather casual Kimonos or Yukata for such occasions and usually go with summer-themed ones.
Well, thanks to both of my grandmothers who love Kimono (during their generation Kimono was still very much part of daily life) that are taken up by my mother who is a licensed Japanese traditional dancer, I have tons of Kimono back home! I was surrounded by Kimono since young and one of the kimono lover… guaranteed. Recently every time I fly back to Japan I started to bring a few.
The Kimono I wore this day was the one my grandmother prepared for my aunt but never been worn. I have the pattern cute and received it from her. Since the size was not perfect, my grandmother and I tailored it together. Kimono is versatile with sizes and since its all strait lines and squared shape, it’s easier to fix. We usually do not wear minimum accessories to appreciate kimono but I felt I needed adds-on in this climate :) If you also a kimono lover, please join us!
