The day Japan was hit by an earthquake and following devastating tsunami.
Within few hours, our communication tools were cut off between Japan and other parts of the world, leaving thousands of people concerned about the safety of the loved ones in the affected area and other parts of Japan.
Mercy Relief, a humanitarian NGO from Singapore, was there soon after the disaster carrying tons of foods and emergency items. (I learnt later that other international NGOs were stranded to get into the affected area.)
I was fortunate enough to get in touch with them, sharing humanitarian information that was only available in Japanese from affected local government. They took me to the affected area twice and gave me opportunities to deliver the much appreciated supports collected by Singaporeans.
There at Mercy Relief, I met one Malay senior manager. He’s retired from this field recently but he became good friends of me and my family. He himself have many children and shared his concern for me leaving my then-breast-fed daughter during my trip to Japan, played with my daughter at his office in Toa Payoh and fund raising event in Orchard.
Well, that friend of mine has shared this movie that grabbed my heart.

Is it because I’ve seen many of this in Japan?
Or is it because I’m living in Singapore as a foreigner?
Or is it because I see many uncles and aunties working under the hot sun?
I can see a Singaporean dad in this movie and that made me think a lot.
I’m fortunate enough to be able to work in Singapore as a foreigner.
But there are many of us who cannot work and struggling to find other means to live.
Prioritising the employment of own people is right. And yes, I agree to that policy and I’m spending my days preparing mentally for a sudden change in a policy that will stop me working.
I wish I could stay here at least another 10 years (I spent 6 years so far) and raise my daughter here. But I know we can’t control our life that easily.
So I just do what I can do now which is to add values to the lives of fellow Singaporeans.
The movie was so powerful and I couldn’t help but to share it here.

以前の仕事の関係で登録している、「世界における人命に関わる自然災害アラート」が届かなかった日。
各所からのダイレクトコールや、家族からのメッセージ、そんな連絡が届いたのも束の間、すぐに日本とのコミュニケーションが絶たれてしまいまいした。
当時もちろん急な呼び寄せも無理だったし、そもそも家族との連絡もとれずに不安な何日かを過ごした方も多いのではないでしょうか。
でもそんな中、シンガポール唯一の緊急支援NGOのMercy Reliefは、災害発生後、数日も経たないうちに被災地に食料などを届けてくれていました。
その後2回、通訳ボランティアとして、同団体のスタッフと一緒にシンガポールの人から集まった、東北へのご支援をお届けするお手伝いをさせて頂きました。
そこで知り合ったマレー人のシニアマネージャー。
この業界からは引退されましたが、公私ともにお世話になりました。
お子さんも多いので、当時乳飲み子をシンガポールに残して東北に行くワタシを気遣ってくれたり、トアパヨの事務所での打合せにまだ小さかったムスメを連れて行っても始終ニッコニコ。
これがね、また泣かせてくれるのです。

ワタシが、戦後の「モッタイナイ」をまだ受け継ぐ世代だからでしょうか。
外国人としての生活をしているからでしょうか。
それとも街で郊外で、時々に気にかかるシンガポール人を見かけるからでしょうか。こちらのムービーが、シンガポールのとあるパパを語っているようで、胸元がぎゅっとなります。
本当にありがたいことに、ワタシは外国人としてこちらで仕事をさせて頂いています。
「自国民の雇用を優先する」ポリシー、もっともだと思います。
(ですので、イチ外国人としてポリシーが変わって急にこちらで働けなくなるシナリオを常に想定しながら毎日過ごしています。)
あと10年はこちらで暮らしたいと妄想していますが、人生そうコントロールできるものではありません。
それならば、やはりできることを・できる時にやるだけなのだと思います。
当地の人々の暮らしのお邪魔をせず、できればプラスを生み出せる、そんなスタンスでお仕事を続けていけたら光栄です。
久々に心がぎゅっと掴まれて、みなさんに見て頂きたいムービーだと思いました。
