A Happy New Year 2016!
Hope the new year will bring you happiness!!!

So we Japanese celebrate the New Year’s Day just like CNY and we have special dish for the celebration.

Kagamimochi, rice cake is a must and I made this from glutenous rice with my daughter.

I also made mizuhiki small decoration.

Simple version without pine tree leaf.

Made a plum flower shape for my daugther. The shape of the mizuhiki all have meanings and this flower means good luck :)

Osechi is the special meal for the new year and usually come in special lacquer boxes called Jubako. The best moment is when you open the lids!

I always like to cook the osechi meal but not all the dish are my family’s favourite so usually I cook some of them and add unaju (eel kabayaki with rice).

Some of the dish I cooked:

Datemaki (伊達巻 or 伊達巻き), sweet rolled omelette mixed with fish paste or mashed shrimp. They symbolize a wish for many auspicious days.

Ebi (エビ), skewered prawns cooked with sake and soy sauce. It symbolizes a wish for a long-life, suggesting long beard and bent waist.

Nishiki tamago (錦卵), egg roulade; the egg is separated before cooking, yellow symbolizing gold, and white symbolizing silver, both of these together symbolising wealth and good fortune.

Some of the dish I bought:

Kamaboko (蒲鉾), broiled fish cake. Traditionally, slices of red and white kamaboko are alternated in rows or arranged in a pattern. The color and shape are reminiscent of Japan rising sun, and have a celebratory, festive meaning.

Kazunoko (数の子), herring roe. Kazu means “number” and ko means “child.” It symbolizes a wish to be gifted with numerous children in the New Year.

Zōni (雑煮), a soup of mochi rice cakes in clear broth (from my home town, Fukuoka). We have quite a variety for the style of zoni.

Served little bit of eel kabayaki, too.

Had the Japanese sake from Kesennuma and served cold. The gold sakazuki (celemonial sake cup) and the gold-rimmed small glasses are from my in-law. I’ve been using silver for long but gold definitely adds festive mood!

When I look back, I can see my skill have improved!!! It all goes the same for fashion, interior and table arrangement that we need to practice after learning the tips and theory. I took a foundation course before and it shows in the pictures.

新年あけましておめでとうございます。
本年もどうぞ宜しくお願いします。

深夜まで起きて色々とやっていた大晦日。
そんなことおかまいなしに元旦も普段通りに起きてくる娘。
前の晩に彼女が描いた鏡餅の絵にぐっときまして、急遽朝から餅米を仕込み、ボウルとすりこぎでお餅をついてみました。

ちょっと粒が残っているけれど、ふっくらやわらかくて夜のうちになくなってしまいました。
そもそもシンガポールではこのままお飾りでは保存できないしね。

昨夜作った水引のお飾り。

こちらのシンプルなバージョンのほうが好み。
でもせっかくなのでよりお正月らしく松の枝と。

娘にはかわいめの梅結びをアレンジしたものを。

水引には全て意味があり、先のあわじ結びは「結びきり」で一度だけのお祝い事に使われることが多いそうです。
でも諸説あり、一度だけでなくても使っていいという説もあるのだとか。
自分でつくる水引デコで、好みのカタチそして作るのも簡単なので、使っちゃいました。

一方梅結びは春に先がけて咲く花木として、運命向上の意味を持っているそう。
カタチもかわいいし、機会があったらまた作りたい！

お重は開ける瞬間が嬉しいので、若干蓋が開いているのを見ないことにしてテーブルにセッティング。
山田平安堂の6角重、数年前に買ってからちょこちょこと使っていてとても重宝しています。
自宅の普通のご飯もステキになるし、おもてなしの時にも大活躍です。

今年も鰻がメインの我が家なので、お節は家族が好みそうなもののみ。
最近娘が卵をよく食べるので、伊達巻きと錦卵を作りました。
伊達巻きのはんぺんがなく、普通にローカルのfish cakeが使えました。

お節はあまり食べたくない夫と、何かしら作りたい私。
娘にも教えたいしね。

黒豆は、絶対食べないと分かっているので変わりにソラマメを皮ごとグリル。
ジャックのように勇敢に?!

お雑煮は博多スタイルのすまし。
鶏肉(地元では「かしわ」と呼びます)と干し椎茸のお出汁です。

夫にはお重に詰めた鰻を、私と娘は小さなグラスにちょこっと盛って。

お酒は気仙沼のを。
金杯も鰻を盛った金縁のグラスも、夫の実家から頂いたもの。
ずっとシルバーのみのテーブルでしたが、おめでたい席にはゴールドもやっぱりステキ。

今年もマイペースでテーブルのレッスンをやっていけたらと思います。
テーブルもオーガナイズも自宅でできるといいのですが、お客さまのご自宅にあるものでライフスタイルに合わせた提案をするほうが効果的だと考えます。
